Blacksmithing & Woodcrafting

Last year kids were able to participate... 
this year they could only watch. 
So, it seems like a hit or miss.

They split wood to make roofing shingles. We had just read about Manly Wilder doing this, too!

We also learned how the Pioneers handled wheat threshing.

They'd dry the wheat out like this....

Using this tool was a lot to handle physically and took a long time to thresh the wheat!

So the kids demonstrated how the farmer's horse would have threshed the wheat instead.
(Real yummy sounding, huh?)

Afterward, the kids were able to ground the wheat into flour.

Cost: FREE! There is a $5 day use fee if you don't have a State Parks permit already.
Important: Stroller and wheelchair friendly.
Tips: 
Bring plenty of water. Some summer days are cooler and breezy there while others are very dry and hot! 
They sell prairie bonnets and aprons in the gift shop.
There are also lots of books to consider purchasing while you are there... some may good for your personal library. 
Restrooms: Kept clean and there is a baby changing table in the Ladie's restroom.
Extra: For nature lovers, there are tons of Blue Bird nests so you can enjoy the bird families.
