Owl Prowl- Silver Falls State Park

Have you ever taken a field trip in the winter... in the dark of night? We did!
This definitely was an Owl Moon night!

Reading Owl Moon by Jane Yolen helped prepare the kids with what to expect and how to behave.

It was a cold, snowy night outside the old barn...
and a nice warm fire and hot coco on the inside. :)

The Park Ranger gave a great presentation on owls!
Another perfect opportunity to reinforce our studies on Ornithology!

We got to see a stuffed barn owl up close.

And we saw a stuffed Red Tail Hawk up close.

After the Ranger's presentation, we headed outdoors with the Ranger and
we prowled for owls. In the past, a Ranger had to be able to make a variety
of owl calls. Now-a-days, the Rangers just get to use fancy high tech equipment
and call for the owls electronically. So the call is made... silence... we listen... and
we heard a Northern Whet Saw Owl echo back to us.
Go here to see the little guy and to hear the soundbite of its call!

If you visit one of our favorite websites, All About Birds, you can listen to a
Northern Whet Saw Owl and see what this darling bird looks like.

What an exceptionally beautiful night!
The full moon really added to the ambiance and along
with the snow, made us feel like we were a part of the story Owl Moon!

We actually made two separate field trips. The first time we heard the Whet Saw Owl.
The second trip, it rained a lot and we didn't hear any owls. And that's just how it goes sometimes.
Regardless, it's an adventure you won't soon forget!

Cost:
FREE! But make sure you have a State Parks pass!
Important:
It's not so much stroller and wheelchair friendly. It's on outdoor trails... and of course if it snows then neither are able to get through very well.
The Best Time:
The rangers will typically do this in February and March.
Tips:
*Be prepared for the weather! You know how it is out here... wet and cold that time of year!
Restrooms:
Are available in the old barn. There are also restrooms available at the camp grounds.
Extra:
For nature lovers, you'll likely see some deer grazing nearby!
Ages: All
